Springsteen: New Album and Tour 2007

Springsteen: New Album and Tour 2007
Posted by frankenschulz under Music

Great news from K2 via Greasy Lake:

About as certain as we can get at this point: The new album has been recorded with members of the ESB already having contributed. Additional tracks are being recorded with and without the ESB. As can best be described at this point is the album is a cross between TOL and The Rising with some “rock” songs and a number of songs pared down. Having trouble describing the sound, but a lot of production is being used wth the versions already recorded. Different versions of each song are being recorded (with and without members of the ESB) and the final versions of about half the album have not been settled on. It was agreed to go ahead with announcing a new recording since it is fully anticipated the final recording phases will go very quickly. The good news is a flurry of recording will be ongoing over the next few weeks with August to be the month of final production, etc. Although a given, the album will have a least 10 songs with a goal of about 13 being projected.

What is interesting is the most definitive and positive news relates to the tour, which will be the last for the entire ESB. Rehearsals for the tour are once again scheduled for AP around Labor Day. Look for the tour to kick off on or about 10/02/2007 in New York with a quick swing around the country until the end of November. All of the major cities, to include LA, DC, Philly, Boston, Chicago, etc. will be covered. The month of December will include a quick tour of Europe, about 10 shows or so. January and part of February look to be time off with a full world tour to begin in full effect during the Spring of 2008 (Feb/March) with outdoor arena shows scheduled for the summer of 2008. The U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia, will all be on the schedule. Bottom line is that we are now entering the final stages in preparation for the final ESB world tour. Stay tuned.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Tour 2007

TREATED AS: TOP SECRET/SCI
More signs of life for Rocktober
Patti Scialfa has been in Europe the past week, doing press for her upcoming Play It as It Lays LP (her album doesn't drop until September 4, but when everybody's on vacation in August, you've gotta get this stuff done in July). Yesterday in Rome she spoke with journalist Niccolo Borella for Agr, who tells us that she confirmed an E Street album in the works. Borello asked if, in addition to her own album, she was also working in the studio with her husband and the E Street Band, and she replied: "Mm-hmm. Bruce is just finishing the record now... working on a record, and of course I still work with that, I still work with him. The best of both worlds!" Borello thought he'd push his luck and ask for a release date, but Patti got wise: "Ohhhhh -- top, top secret information!" she said, laughing. See the Corriere Della Sera story here.

Here in the States, the Boston Globe adds to the tour chatter: "The Boss's reps couldn't be reached, but the buzz is that Bruce and the E Street Band are in discussions to play the [TD Banknorth] Garden for a couple of nights in mid-November."

Stung! Speculators find little demand for pricey Police tickets

The resale market has gone cold for the year's hottest rock tour, which comes tonight to a sold-out Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

By Jon Bream, Star Tribune

Last update: July 02, 2007 – 11:53 PM
It is the biggest, hottest and most expensive rock concert tour of the year.

But fans -- and brokers -- trying to sell extra tickets to tonight's sold-out Police reunion concert in St. Paul are getting stung.

"I've never seen so many tickets available," said Mike Nowakowski, co-owner of Ticket King, a Hudson, Wis.-based ticket seller, on Monday. "I've never seen it on the day before a show where you can buy tickets for pennies on the dollar."

Last week, Ticket King listed more than 350 people trying to sell 1,000 tickets to the Xcel Center concert.

On eBay, a $50 ticket was sold for 99 cents on Sunday; someone was asking as little as $26 for a $225 ticket, the top-priced seat, on Monday. (In Minnesota, it is illegal -- until the law is repealed Aug. 1 -- to sell a ticket above face value.)

The 17,000 tickets to the Xcel concert sold out quickly when they went on sale March 5. According to Ticketmaster, the Police is the most requested concert in the first six months of 2007, moving more than 900,000 tickets (totaling more than $102 million) in North America. It's common that buyers pick up a number of tickets for the resale market. In this case, the supply exceeded the demand.

Why?

The tour is overhyped, the tickets are overpriced and -- hey -- it's a holiday week and many people are out of town, according to secondary ticket sellers and fans.

"The Police were a good band," said ticket broker Bobby the Brain, who has been selling on the streets for 39 years and at one time worked at A&M Records with the Police. "But they weren't the Who or Paul McCartney. They did five albums and broke up quickly."

Bobby, who like all street brokers declined to give a surname, thinks there is limited built-up demand to see the Police because the trio's front man, Sting, has toured regularly since the group stopped performing at its commercial peak in 1984.

Others think $225 is a steep price for the Police compared with other blockbuster names such as Roger Waters ($99.50), Tool ($55), Prince ($131.21), Kenny Chesney ($68.75) and Tim McGraw/Faith Hill ($89.75).

"In this corporate world of entertainment, they price out the middle-class guys like me," said Monte Olmsted, 44, of Minneapolis, a corporate communications specialist for a financial institution. "I'm a big fan of the Police. But these tickets are so expensive."

Joe Stevenson, of Minneapolis, asked a friend to buy him a pair of tickets, but suffered sticker shock when he saw the bill for $500. He resold his seats for $300, taking a 40 percent loss. "Pearl Jam is my favorite band," he said. "I wouldn't pay $250 to see them; I'd probably pay $100 or $125."

The timing of the Police concert -- the night before July 4th -- is not the best, said Ticket King's Nowakowski.

"People in our business underestimate the effect of concerts in the summer in the Twin Cities, especially over a holiday," he said. "If people have to choose between a concert and a cabin, they choose a cabin or outdoor activities."

Naive speculators

Even rabid fans, such as Karen Whyte, of Rapid City, S.D., thought it would be easy to resell tickets.

Calling the Police "absolutely my favorite band," she bought two Xcel tickets via a Best Buy promotion before they went on sale through Ticketmaster. Trying to get even better seats, she bought two more from the Police's fan club, hoping to sell three of them on the Internet. When that strategy failed, she turned to her family. "My sister and niece are driving in from Kentucky and I'm gifting them $450 worth of tickets," said Whyte, who has invested $2,500 in Police tickets this summer (she "ate" $1,000 worth of VIP tickets to the Denver show last month). "I couldn't even get a $50 bid for a $225 seat on eBay or Craigslist. I'll try to sell it at my hotel. I knew it was a risk when I bought the tickets, and it's biting me."

There is a silver lining for Whyte. She won a Best Buy contest to attend the Police's pre-show sound check and meet the band members.

Some inexperienced speculators miscalculated.

"I screwed up," admitted Nate Sund, 31, of Maple Grove, who had only one offer of $50 for his $250 ticket on Craigslist. "I thought scalpers got so much more. I'm going to end up using the ticket myself."

Even Ticket King is feeling burned by the Police. "We're going to lose a lot of money," said Nowakowski. "We have tickets at all the venues around the country; it's happening all over."

Officials at Xcel Energy Center are aware of the re-sale ticket market but "as far as we're concerned, all the tickets are sold and they are out of our control," said arena VP and general manager Jack Larson. "We're expecting a full house."

Savvy Police fan Olmsted has other expectations. He plans to show up at the X about 7:30 p.m., when opening act Fiction Plane takes the stage. He will peruse what the brokers have to offer on the corner of Kellogg Boulevard and W. 7th Street. He has learned from experience.

"Last year, a friend and I went to the Tom Petty/Pearl Jam second concert and we got $100 tickets on the street for 40 bucks each," Olmsted said. "We missed the first two Pearl Jam songs, but I'm sure Tom Petty and Eddie Vedder [Pearl Jam singer] would be proud of us for not being taken to the cleaners. If I don't see the Police, I'll live."

Email newsletter Most performers insist on hot towels and drinks in their dressing room, or, just to be difficult, that their M&Ms be separated according to colour.

But after nearly five decades in the business, Barbra Streisand obviously feels she can demand a little extra investment in time and money.

As she swept into town yesterday for what is being billed as the most expensive concert tour of all time, the preparations were furious.

The stage at Manchester's MEN arena, on which she was going to croon classics such as The Way We Were and Evergreen last night, was strewn with roses.

The arena had been swept by police dog teams trained to sniff out explosives and there were metal detectors on the doors.

Waiting for her backstage were five fabric-upholstered furniture suites, 60 tables and 120 bath-sized towels.

Even the security staff were immaculate in the 'dark jackets, blazers or sweaters with no T-shirts' that she requested.

Review: Barbra the evergreen makes it all look so easy

The diva herself would be ferried around in a limousine accompanied by her entourage in 13 tractor-style trailer trucks, before being whisked to London on her private jet after the two-and-ahalf-hour concert.

Miss Streisand, 65, also shocked fans with her exorbitant ticket prices. Though they start at £75 in Manchester, some cost a staggering £600, and are fetching £1,400 a piece in Internet auctions.

Many die-hard Streisand fans were not deterred. But others complain that it is three times that for the best seats for a Madonna or Rolling Stones concert.

And some say they were duped into paying high prices for her last British concerts in 1994 in the belief it was her final tour. Former fan Rocky Fernandez from London said: "Miss Streisand has often spoken out about equality.

"She claims to be donating a percentage of her hugely vulgar ticket prices to disadvantaged youngsters but where is the equality for those fans not able to fork out £100, let alone £600?"

The singer, who kicked off her tour in the U.S. and Europe, will go on to play Dublin this weekend and three dates in London's O2 arena later this month.

Although she broke box-office records in 14 of her 16 venues in the U.S., raking in £46million, she had to cancel the first leg of her European tour amid a row about 'absurd' ticket prices.

In Italy, consumer campaigners even urged authorities to refuse her permission to use Rome's 24,000-seater stadium.

A spokesman for Miss Streisand, who has 50 gold, 30 platinum and 13 multi-platinum albums, and starred in many movies including the 1969 musical Hello Dolly!, justified the cost by likening her to Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

He added: "Seeing her in concert is a pretty momentous occasion."

Bruce Springsteen to Release New E Street Band Album in Fall

Bruce Springsteen to Release New E Street Band Album in Fall

Bruce Springsteen | Michael Jackson | Kelly Clarkson | Odds 'n' Ends

Bruce Springsteen to Release New E Street Band Album in Fall

The general disarray at Sony Music's Columbia Records may have a savior: Bruce Springsteen.

The Boss, as we still call him, is apparently planning a new album for release in late fall. Some sources insist that this will be an E Street Band album, and not another side project like the "Seeger Sessions" or a solo collection of introspective songs.

An E Street Band album means a big rock 'n' roll sound with Springsteen's featured players like Steve van Zandt, Max Weinberg and Clarence Clemons.

Sources tell me that tracks have been recorded with the group, and that the hope among Bruce insiders is that he will choose their project over several others he may have cooking.

"You never know," one observer said, "but it's looking better and better."

Sony insiders definitely confirmed in the last few days that Springsteen is scheduled to release new music before the end of the year. He would have to be, since last year, former Sony Music CEO Andy Lack helped the rock legend land a contract worth $100 million over several years.

Another and very important player would be Springsteen's wife: rocker Patti Scialfa. The timing would be perfect since Scialfa — one of my favorite female rockers — already has an album set for release in early September.

"Play It As It Lays" is Scialfa's first new set of songs since "23rd Street Lullaby," which was released three years ago. Patti is already booked on "Letterman" and the "Today" show as well as "The View," where she may have to co-host if Barbara Walters doesn't find replacements for her departed panelists.

For Bruce, a new album would be the first E Street Band release since "The Rising," his magnificent recording about 9/11. That album sold better than any previous Springsteen albums and picked up a number of Grammy nominations. Springsteen lost the award for best album to Norah Jones' debut, if you recall.

If you never tried it, pick up "The Rising" or download some of its amazing tracks like "Empty Sky" or "You're Missing."

The latter song, which had a serious message, could also be the theme song at Sony these days. Quite a few people are missing — and they're not coming back. I'm told that layoffs are continuing, with several departments in publicity and marketing gutted.

When I mentioned this to a Sony higher-up the other day, the person replied: "You are the last one writing about the record business. Don't you realize it's over?"

Maybe, but if so, what do I do with my 1,200 45s and thousands of CDs? Not everything fits in a computer. And when the Springsteen album comes out, I don't want to listen to it on earbuds, but through my Rogue tube amplifier and Sequerra Met 7 speakers. Loud, baby, loud.

Beatles Songs 'Safe for Now'

I have been telling you for some time now that on May 31, 2008, Michael Jackson will lose the Beatles catalog. Sony has the right to buy it all out from him, thanks to a 2006 refinancing deal.

But sources tell me that Sony isn't so eager to pony up the $300 to $600 million this purchase would entail. For now, at least, my sources say, "the company is happy with its passive partner. Michael isn't bothering us and we're not bothering him."

Recently, Sony/ATV Music Publishing has made some excellent strategic purchases, thanks to new president and financial partner Martin Bandier. They picked up the Famous Music catalog and will continue to expand in the next year.

So Jackson is safe, but this also means he can't raise cash against the catalog anymore. He would have to go back to work to do that.

And stories about Jackson on the Maryland shore last week were amusing. But Jackson was also buzzing around Virginia, as this column reported. For the first few days, he was in northern Virginia's 540 area code checking out shopping malls. There's nothing like a good food court when your career is tanking.

Kelly Clarkson 60 Percent Off

Kelly Clarkson's "My December" dropped off around 60 percent in sales for its second week, bringing the pop star's self-penned collection to a decent 416,000 copies. Next week is the one to watch, especially if "Sober" doesn't appeal to kids as a summer hit.

I'm glad I'm not a kid now. In 1975, the big summer hit was "Get Down Tonight."

Odds 'n' Ends

Russell Simmons was looking thin and trim as he entertained friends at the Waverly Inn for dinner. He skipped the meal himself. He's a vegan. ...

If you love music and film — in particular rock music and great films — you don't want to miss the Mods and Rockers Festival starting this weekend in Hollywood. Check it out at modsandrockers.com.

The choices are varied and fantastic, including a first-ever showing of a documentary about the late and very great Harry Nilsson and a free rock concert featuring Spencer Davis ("Gimme Some Lovin'"), Stephen Bishop ("On and On") and — this is really a must-see — the Records, the cult British New Wave group from the late '70s whose "Starry Nights" is a classic on every level. ...

Also this weekend in La La Land: Hollywood Roadshow is auctioning off over 750 movie props from "Dreamgirls," "Transformers," "1408," "Disturbia," "Blades of Glory" and other films. There's also lots of film memorabilia, and you can bid on it online as well at hollywoodroadshow.com.

Garth Brooks live in concert 2007 Live Earth show

Live Earth Concert to Be Held in Washington on Saturday

By J. Freedom Du Lac
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 6, 2007; 9:26 AM

Live Earth will be live in Washington, after all.

Al Gore's global-warming concert series -- previously given the cold shoulder here -- will touch down for a satellite show at the National Museum of the American Indian tomorrow morning, just hours before the main event in New Jersey.

The Washington concert will feature a rare performance by country-music power couple Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, along with remarks by the former vice president and 2000 Democratic White House nominee.

Their appearances -- to be televised internationally, with the U.S. Capitol in the backdrop -- will be high-wattage add-ons to the museum's previously scheduled Live Earth spinoff, "Mother Earth," a daylong program of performances and speeches by members of the Native American community.

The concert is free and will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the outdoor plaza of the museum, at 4th St. and Independence Ave. SW.

Gore made the surprise announcement today on CBS's "Early Show." The Washington show will be one of nine concerts staged on seven continents to bring attention to Gore's effort to raise concern about global climate change.

Gore had originally hoped to stage the primary U.S. show in Washington, but finding a suitable venue proved difficult. The Mall was booked for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, as well as a Christian festival called Together One Unity. A bipartisan effort to bring the concert to the grounds of the U.S. Capitol ran into Republican roadblocks.

When efforts to find a D.C. location proved futile, Gore and Live Earth Executive Producer Kevin Wall announced in April that they would go to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Scheduled performers there include the Police, the Dave Matthews Band, Alicia Keys, Fall Out Boy, Akon, Melissa Etheridge, Kanye West and Bon Jovi.

Now, Gore will have a presence in Washington, too, on the Mall's southeastern edge. He said he will begin his day at the Washington event before heading to New Jersey.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the scheduled appearance by Brooks, the country superstar who set album-sales and touring records in the 1990s before retiring from the music business in 2001.

Brooks rarely performs in public anymore, but he agreed to participate in Live Earth after he was personally invited by Gore. Don't expect a full-blown comeback concert, though: a representative for Brooks says the singer is likely to perform a single song with his wife, Yearwood -- the tolerance anthem "We Shall Be Free."

Van Halen tour is back on !! fall 2007

According to www.tixx.com , VAN HALEN is preparing to hit the road in the U.S. beginning in September. The group's lineup for the trek is expected to include David Lee Roth (vocals), Eddie Van Halen (guitar), Alex Van Halen (drums) and Eddie's 16-year-old son Wolfgang Van Halen (bass).

Wolfgang Van Halen, the projected replacement for VH bassist Michael Anthony, told People magazine in April 2007 that he wasn't disappointed there wasn’t' going to be a VAN HALEN tour this summer following his father's decision to check himself into rehab. "My dad's taking care of himself," he said. "I also think I'm too young for the experience, because I know there are a lot of bad things out there."

Eddie Van Halen issued a statement addressed to fans in early March announcing that he was seeking treatment because "at the moment I do not feel that I can give you my best.

"That's why I have decided to enter a rehabilitation facility to work on myself, so that in the future I can deliver the 110 percent that I feel I owe you and want to give you," the statement said.

Back in January, Eddie Van Halen told Rolling Stone magazine about Wolfgang, "Wait until you hear this kid play. I pick him up from school every day and we jam. We've got a shredding bass player now that's laying down the law for Alex [Van Halen, drums], so I get to weave in
