Metallica Fall tour 2009 rocks NYC Madison Square Garden

Metallica's World Magnetic Tour will return to North America from Europe this fall and make its way through this continent beginning in Nashville on Sept. 14.

Metallica tickets have five Canadian dates set for Montreal, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City in September and October, with the possibility of more dates being added, according to the band's website.

"European Summer Vacation, part 2,347 will end on August 2, so that can only mean one thing ... more dates in the U.S. and Canada!" the band wrote.

"We just rocked Austin at SXSW and are super psyched that we'll be back in North America visiting our friends in the Fall as the World Magnetic Tour keeps rolling on. We had an amazing time on the last run in '08 and early '09 and we are so ready to do it again!"

Tickets to most shows (including the Canadian dates) go on sale on April 4, while the rest will be available on April 11. Pre-sale information is available to members of the band's fan club.

Ticketmaster, Live Nation Fall on Justice Request

Ticketmaster, Live Nation Fall on Justice Request (Update2)

it does not look good for TMTK

By Matt Townsend

March 20 (Bloomberg) -- Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc., owner of the world’s largest ticket-selling network, and Live Nation Inc., the largest concert promoter, fell in U.S. trading after saying the U.S. Justice Department requested more information on their proposed merger.

Live Nation fell 40 cents, or 14 percent, to $2.52 at 4:05 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Ticketmaster dropped 12 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $3.97 in Nasdaq Stock Exchange composite trading.

The companies said today in a statement they expect the deal to close before the end of the year.

Ticketmaster, based in West Hollywood, California, and Live Nation, based in Beverly Hills, announced their plans to merge on Feb. 10. The companies said at the time the enterprise value of the deal was about $2.5 billion.

The day after the deal was announced, the Justice Department opened its investigation. The two companies would control 80 percent of concert ticket sales if they merged, Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, said Feb. 11.

After reviewing the additional material, the government may file an injunction to stop the merger if it believes it would violate antitrust laws, according to guidelines in the Hart- Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976.

The government received 1,656 pre-merger notifications in 2008, according to the Justice Department’s Web site. Investigations were launched into 84 mergers and the government made a second request, like it did today, for information in 20 cases.

Some lawmakers expressed concern about the deal at a hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary committee on Feb. 24. Democratic chairman Herb Kohl of Wisconsin said during the hearing the merger would put “a stranglehold on all segments of the concert business.”

The companies’ chief executives defended the deal, saying the combination wouldn’t hurt competition or mean higher ticket prices.

Cruefest 2009 tickets and tour dates from Tixx.com

Crüe Fest Lineup Revealed
Posted on Monday March 16, 2009 at 03:31 PM 5
Arriving in an ambulance à la Dr. Feelgood, Mötley Crüe held a press conference today at Fuse TV’s New York studios to announce who will accompany the band on its second annual Crüe Fest.

Paging Dr. Feelgood!

(AP Photo)

And what a lineup it is – Godsmack, Theory of a Deadman, Drowning Pool and Charm City Devils will cruise North America with Mötley Crüe , playing amphitheatres and giving audiences a good dose of old-fashioned mayhem. What’s more, the Crüe will play its first #1 album – Dr. Feelgood – in its entirety every night.
The tour was announced a few weeks ago, but the boys held back on the lineup until today’s press conference.
Arriving at Fuse TV in an ambulance accompanied by scantily clad nurses, the Crüe livened up an otherwise typical lunch hour in NYC. Theory of a Deadman’s Tyler Connolly, Drowning Pool’s Ryan McCombs and John Allen of the Charm City Devils joined the band at the press conference. All three vocalists appear in Crüe ’s new “White Trash Christmas” video as well as the single shipping to radio.
For Theory of a Deadman, Crüe Fest 2 means more cities, more hotels with Mötley Crüe. Theory is currently touring with Mötley and plays New York City’s Madison Square Garden tonight.

Jackson extends UK run to 44 gigs, fans frustrated

Jackson extends UK run to 44 gigs, fans frustrated
Thu Mar 12, 2009 8:57am EDT Email | Print | Share| Reprints | Single Page[-] Text [+]

1 of 1Full SizeLONDON (Reuters) - U.S. pop star Michael Jackson has extended his run of comeback concerts in London to 44, starting on July 8 and ending on February 12, 2010, the official website for the shows said on Thursday.

When the 50-year-old announced his plan to return to the stage last week, he committed to only 10 concerts at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena.

Demand has been such that dozens of extra shows have been added, while hundreds of tickets have turned up on online auction sites like eBay amid criticism of the handling of the sales.

A pair of "VIP" tickets to the opening show are being offered on eBay for 16,000 pounds ($22,000), compared with the official face value of the tickets at between 50 and 75 pounds.

A technical hitch when tickets were first made available on Wednesday morning on the website www.michaeljacksonlive.com meant many people were unable to log on and make purchases.

"We have witnessed an unprecedented level of demand for the Michael Jackson concerts at The O2," said Chris Edmonds, managing director of Ticketmaster.

"Unfortunately due to a technical issue, we were unable to facilitate all immediate ticket requests. Apologies to those fans who were unable to log on, but fans should keep on trying to purchase tickets."

Some fans reacted angrily to the glitches. Rich Diment told the Sun newspaper: "I've been a Michael Jackson fan all my life. It's frustrating as well as a rip-off."

Jackson has been a virtual recluse since his acquittal on child abuse charges in a 2005 trial, his last full set of live concerts was 12 years ago and he has not recorded an album of new music since "Invincible" in 2001.

But he is still the "King of Pop" to his legion of followers despite his sometimes bizarre behavior and appearance in recent years. He has sold around 750 million records, won 13 Grammys and is regarded as one of the biggest pop acts of all time.

DePaul shocks Cincinnati, makes case for expanded Big East tournament

NCAA bids at stake as conference tourney tips off at Garden
Breaking down the Big East tournament
The unpredictable is always a component in the Big East tournament and it didn't take long to show up this year.

DePaul lost all 18 of its conference games this season, but Tuesday stunned Cincinnati 67-57 in a first-round contest at the Garden. It's a triumph that wouldn't have happened if the Big East hadn't expanded its format to include all 16 teams this season.

"It's been so long," said Dar Tucker, who equaled Will Walker for the team high with 17 points. "Just to get a win - it's been kind of frustrating ... the hard work does pay off."

The loss is devastating for the Bearcats (18-14). Cincinnati was in the conversation for an NCAA at-large bid until about two weeks ago. It lost its last three in the regular season and now this. The 'Cats might not even warrant an NIT bid now.

Cincinnati led 38-31 with 16 minutes left when DePaul went on a 22-5 run that included 10 points from Tucker. A putback by Matija Poscic made it 53-43 with 6:12 to play. The Demons (9-23) made six of nine free throws down the stretch.

"Hopefully we proved there is a lot of value in bringing everybody," Blue Demons coach Jerry Wainwright said of the expanded format. "To have kids go through an 18-game schedule as tough as ours is and not have the reward of coming to New York - I think this is kind of ... what college basketball should be."

The Beatles & Pearl Jam at Radio City

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will both take the stage in support of transcendental meditation when the onetime Beatles perform at the “Change Begins Within” benefit concert at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on April 4th. The concert will benefit the David Lynch Foundation which, according to a press release, “raises funds to teach one million at-risk children to meditate — giving them life-long tools to overcome stress and violence and promote peace and success in their lives.” Yes, that David Lynch, the director who brought you unsettling films like Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks.

Any time you have Macca and Ringo, there’s not much need for a supporting cast, but Lynch has never been one to follow the rules: Eddie Vedder, Sheryl Crow, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Ben Harper, Moby and Donovan — who is head of the musical wing of the David Lynch Foundation — will also perform at the event. Russell Simmons and Lynch vet Laura Dern will also appear. “In moments of madness, it has helped me find moments of serenity,” McCartney said of transcendental meditation in a statement. “I would like to think that it would help provide them a quiet haven in a not-so-quiet world.”

To those of you who contacted the David Lynch Foundation following the ticket sale:

We have received quite a few emails from disappointed fans. We wanted to give you the courtesy of a follow-up note about the pre-sale Sunday and public sale Monday, and to apologize for any frustration and disappointment we have caused you.

Most of the emails dealt with:
Flawed pre-sale on Sunday
No code for the pre-sale received
No tickets available from the start of the public sale on Monday
With ticket prices starting at $79.50 and $99.50 we really tried our best to make the ticket opportunities affordable and accessible to fans.

The foundation held 75% of the seats priced between $79.50 and $325.50 for the pre-sale Sunday. The pre-sale was offered to people who registered on our public website over the last few months.

25% of these seats, or about 1,200, were held for the public sale Monday morning. There were some $504.50 seats available for both pre-sale and public sale but the majority were held by our event planner for premium tickets and packages.

Regarding the pre-sale there are a couple of points to mention. Although it was not intentional, we bear responsibility for the fact that the pre-sale wasn't held on a level playing field. We gave first notice of the pre-sale promotion code to about 3,000 people beginning right at 11:00am on Sunday. The notice went out at the same time to everyone but we overlooked that emails don't arrive to everyone at the same time, so not everyone had an equal opportunity to purchase. Tickets were still available as of 11:10 or 11:15, but for those who received the email later than that, they were frustrated and disappointed, and we apologize.

A number of people were told by Ticketmaster that the pre-sale Sunday morning started at 9am Eastern. This is true. We offered a limited, private 2-hour pre-sale window to a select list of friends of the foundation - people known to us. The great majority of pre-sale tickets were still available at 11am Eastern.

A few dozen people told us they never received their code at all. We did have emails bounce back to us as undeliverable.

Many said they reached Ticketmaster for the Monday morning public sale at exactly 11:00 am, or a few minutes after, only to be told the concert was sold out. They could not believe this was possible. Ticketmaster suggested the demand was so great that internet ordering could easily claim 1,200 tickets in a matter of moments. We did hear from individuals who beat the scalpers and got a ticket on the Monday morning sale. But many didn't. We were alarmed seeing that tickets were listed on the scalping sites days before they went on sale. To our knowledge these tickets were only being held by Ticketmaster for the pre-sale and public sale.

It is disappointing to us that we can not accommodate all the fans who want to attend. And very disappointing for us to see how many tickets are being sold on the ticket reselling sites from people who only care about making a buck. It's not kind to the foundation and it's not kind to fans. If we do have any tickets in the $79.50 to $329.50 range come into our possession we will inform you, and you can be assured they will be sold at face value.

David Lynch is such an authentic and good-hearted man. Please don't let this reflect on him or his foundation's work. Thank you for your understanding and I apologize again for your disappointment.

Please feel free to email me back if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Yankees President Opposes Steering Ticket Pricing

Yankees President Opposes Steering Ticket Pricing (Update1)
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Jeremy R. Cooke

March 6 (Bloomberg) -- New York Yankees President Randy Levine said he opposes state lawmakers’ efforts to dictate prices for tickets sold at sports stadiums built with public support such as the franchise’s new ballpark in the Bronx.

State Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh, a Manhattan Democrat, has introduced a bill requiring that 7 percent of tickets sold to any sporting event carry “affordable prices” as a condition of pro-sports facilities receiving state or local benefits.

New York City’s Industrial Development Agency in January approved a second round of tax-exempt financing to finish building the new Yankee Stadium, opening next month. The agency has sold more than $1.2 billion of bonds secured by payments in lieu of property taxes owed by the Major League Baseball team.

“If you’re charging too much, people will not come,” Levine said at an assembly committee hearing today in lower Manhattan. “If we’re not selling enough tickets to pay it back, the responsibility is on us to adjust.”

Levine prefaced his comments by saying he hadn’t seen a copy of the legislation. Today’s hearing was the second called by Assemblyman Richard Brodsky after the Westchester Democrat subpoenaed Levine to provide documents related to the public financing of the new Yankee Stadium. Brodsky chairs the committee that oversees public authorities such as the IDA.

The Yankees provided only part of what Brodsky seeks during his examination of public subsidies the team received when it built a replacement for the city-owned Yankee Stadium that dates to 1923, the assemblyman said.

Another Hearing

“It is likely that to complete this process” there will have to be another hearing, Brodsky said. “We will do what we have to do to get the documents.”

Whether the already-approved benefits for the new Yankee Stadium would be subject to the ticket affordability proposal remains “open to question,” Kavanagh said.

Levine said the Yankees already try to set prices that attract fans “at all economic levels” while also giving away “tens of thousands” of tickets each season as part of community-outreach programs. The lowest priced single-game tickets are $14 bleacher seats.

Yankee Stadium LLC bonds with a 7 percent tax-exempt interest rate due in 2049 traded at 109.5 cents on the dollar today to yield 5.73 percent, according to trade data reported to the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board. The debt was sold at 100 cents during the last week of January.

U2 Tour 2009 to use a full 360 stage at one end of Giants stadium here is the offical seating chart

The stage will be wide open down one end the the stadium and it will turn a full 360 during the show, the tickets behind stage should be some of the best seats in the house according to Tom Wilson VP of ticketing site Tixx.com

Tixx.com has been selling tickets for U2 since the early 90's online and will have tickets for sale in all cities in the USA & Canada

U2 has booked a Sept. 24 concert at Giants Stadium as part of its upcoming 360 Degree Tour.

The title of the tour refers to its staging. The band will be able to be seen from all sides, though the stage won't be exactly in the middle of the stadiums, but toward one side or another. Lights, video screens and speakers will hover above the musicians, held up by four structures that look like giant insect legs, and function somewhat like poles in a tent.

"We've been talking about it for years, and this is the time we're going to do it," the band's manager Paul McGuinness told the Irish magazine, Hot Press. "It will be necessary to tell people a bit about the production before the tickets go on sale because otherwise they're going to say, 'Hold on, that seat is behind the stage.' Now, it's not behind the stage. There is no behind."

The tour begins June 30 in Barcelona, and stays in Europe through Aug. 22. Besides the Meadowlands show there are only three confirmed North American dates: Sept. 12 at Soldier Field in Chicago; Sept. 16 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto; and Sept. 20 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. The band is planning to continue touring in North America through October, though.

Ticket information was not immediately available.

U2 World Tour 2009-2010 ticket information from Tixx.com

U2360, U2's world tour in support of its new album "No Line on the Horizon," will play stadiums around the world, beginning June 30 in Barcelona, Billboard can exclusively reveal. Details of the tour will be announced March 9.

It’s a groundbreaking tour with production that includes a 360-degree audience configuration, ambitious staging and a cylindrical video screen. “We’re very excited about the idea to go on the road with this album,” the Edge says. “It’s an album that I think is going to translate so well to the live context. The songs we’ve tried in rehearsal are sounding fantastic, so that’s got everyone really fired up.”

U2 will be playing in a setting unique among all previous tours, by any artist. The tour will be global and lengthy. U2 will stay in Europe through Aug. 22, then hit American shores on Sept. 12 with a show at Soldier Field in Chicago. The band will play in North America until Oct. 28 and plans on working the globe until the fall of 2010. In addition to its production firsts, the tour is destined to become one of the highest-grossing tours ever; at $389 million, the band’s 2005-2007 Vertigo tour is second only to the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang trek.

After playing arenas in North America and stadiums elsewhere on their last few tours, U2 will play stadiums everywhere this time out. “This is going to be completely different, and that’s what makes it exciting -- finding something new to bring to the touring culture,” says the Edge. “It’s hard to come up with something that’s fundamentally different, but we have, I think, on this tour. Where we’re taking our production will never have been seen before by anybody, and that’s an amazing thing to be able to say. For a band like U2 that really thrive on breaking new ground, it’s a real thrill.”

As they have for well over a decade, Live Nation global music chairman Arthur Fogel and his team will produce and promote U2 worldwide. Committing to a global stadium tour is “obviously a major undertaking on a bunch of different levels,” says Fogel. “On the last tour it basically broke down indoors in America and stadiums outside of America. Both shows were pretty different and they were both incredible, but I think the general feeling, and certainly mine, was the experience of U2 in a stadium is special and unique, and it would be great for North America to experience that the way the rest of the world did the last time around.”

Playing in a 360 configuration will increase the capacity by about 15%-20%, depending on the stadium. The configuration opens up myriad opportunities for scaling ticket prices, an important consideration for Fogel and the band. The top ticket price will be slightly higher than last time and the bottom price will be lower, with the floor seats -- the closest to the stage -- the lowest priced. In fact, playing larger capacity venues allows for more conservative pricing overall. Field level is going to be $55, and there will be 10,000 tickets a show, every show, at $30, Fogel says. The price points are $250, $90-$95, depending on the market; $55 and $30.

On-sales will begin in Europe in mid-March, and North American on-sales will start in late March/early April. U2 will also resurrect its random upgrade program first seen on the Elevation tour in 2001, where select fans purchasing GA tickets will be moved closest to the stage.

The basic layout of the tour is Europe in July and August, America in September and October with a total of 40-45 shows this year; more stadiums in America in June and July next year, then August and September in Europe. The trek then tentatively will hit South America in the fall of 2010, for potentially as many as 90-100 shows over the next two years.

This will be the first tour under U2’s 12-year multi-rights deal with Live Nation, though the band’s relationship with Fogel dates back to a show at the El Mocambo in Toronto in 1979. “Arthur and I are great friends and I’ve been very interested in the Live Nation project for years now, and we’ve been very supportive of it,” says U2 manager Paul McGuinness. “We obviously intend to go on performing for a long time to come and that’s what the deal reflects. U2 always had parallel careers as recording artists and a touring act and it was always fundamental to our way of thinking that the two should be complimentary.”

[Edit note: The tour name was changed from "Kiss The Future" to "U2360" on March 7]

Watching Golf’s Masters Gets Cheaper as Rentals Drop

Watching Golf’s Masters Gets Cheaper as Rentals Drop (Update1)

By Michael Buteau

March 5 (Bloomberg) -- Diane Starr says business has never been this bad in 35 years of helping golf fans find accommodations at the Masters Tournament.

“Everybody assumes that the Masters weathers it all, but not in a crisis like this,” said Starr, president of Corporate Quarters Inc., which leases homes to companies and individuals during the event. “There are a lot of houses on the market.”

With golf’s premier tournament scheduled to begin April 9 in Augusta, Georgia, house rental prices are down as much as 50 percent, according to Starr. Four-day tickets are selling for 15 percent less than last year on EBay Inc.’s Stubhub, the largest online ticket broker.

The Masters, the first of golf’s four annual major tournaments, was first played in 1934 and now draws executives and golf fans from around the world. While Starr said the Masters represents the “best of the best” in sports entertainment, the recession is driving down prices.

The U.S. economy shrank at a 6.2 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, the most since 1982, revised government figures showed last week.

Week-long rentals of private homes have dropped to $7,000 from $9,000 for a typical four-bedroom, three-bath property, and to $15,000 from $30,000 for five-bedroom estate homes used for private parties, said Starr, who spent 15 years working for the Augusta Chamber of Commerce’s Masters Housing rental unit before starting her own company two decades ago.

“I’ve been doing this longer than anybody in this town and this is as bad as I’ve seen it,” Starr said during an interview in her office four miles from the club. “We had 9/11 and then Martha Burk. This has hurt us worse than either one of those.”

Martha Burk

In 2003, Burk led a protest near the front gate of Augusta National over the private club’s all-male membership. Burk, the former leader of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, said she would also stage protests at the headquarters of companies sponsoring or attending the tournament. Many of them stayed away.

The economy isn’t the only difficulty golf has faced in recent weeks. The sport has been a target as corporate spending comes under scrutiny.

Northern Trust Corp., criticized by members of Congress for entertaining employees and clients at a company-sponsored U.S. PGA Tour event, said last week that it will repay $1.6 billion in federal bailout funds “as quickly as prudently possible.” Wells Fargo & Co., which sponsors a Charlotte, North Carolina-based tournament, and Morgan Stanley, a sponsor of the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, recently said they won’t entertain executives or clients at the events.

‘Very Different’

“This is very different than any other year,” said Steve Parry, owner of the 1018 Club, a corporate hospitality house less than 500 yards (457 meters) from the main entrance of Augusta National Golf Club. “The companies that would have brought 50 people are down to maybe 20. And those who sent 20 are down to zero.”

Parry usually entertains about 1,200-1,600 people during tournament week at the club, which has two bars, 12 large-screen televisions and an 8,000-square foot outdoor deck. This year, he said he doesn’t know how many he will host.

“There are still companies that are on the fence,” Parry said.

No Takers

Les Perry has been unable to rent his six-bedroom, four- bathroom home three miles from the club. He said he had a deal with a “well-known” financial services company to rent his house for $8,000 -- “substantially” less than last year -- that fell through about 10 days ago. He wouldn’t name the company.

“I told my wife, if I’m laying in my own bed during Masters week this year, I probably won’t be a happy man,” said Perry, a 37-year-old general manager of a local family-owned beverage distributor.

Tickets for this year’s tournament, which have a face value of $200 for all four competition rounds, have sold for an average of $3,377 on EBay’s Stubhub, down from $3,930 in 2008.

Sean Pate, a spokesman for Stubhub, said he expects prices to keep falling as the tournament approaches.

The company has sold “hundreds” of one-day passes for an average price of $400, Pate said. Tickets for Monday and Tuesday practice rounds have a face value of $36. Wednesday tickets cost $41. Stubhub has sold just four of the approximately 100 four-day “competition round” passes it has listed.

Pound Cake

Inside the one-story brick building that houses Starr’s business, autographed pictures of Masters champions Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Gary Player share wall space with a handwritten letter from Barbara Nicklaus. The wife of six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus thanked Starr for her “delicious” pound cake and “comfortable” home in 1996. Starr’s company also finds rental homes for many of the tournament’s competitors.

Starr declined to name many of her “big clients” who have decided not to attend. Among those renting homes this year are International Business Machines Corp., Daimler AG’s Mercedes- Benz, Exxon Mobil Corp. and AT&T Inc. All four companies are official tournament sponsors.

Starr rented about 400 of the 1,000 homes she listed in 2008, approaching her record, set in 2000. This year, she has rented fewer than 300. As the tournament approaches, Starr has been fielding calls from desperate homeowners.

“They tell me, ‘my kids can’t go to Disney World if you don’t rent my house,’” she said. “At first it was just extra gravy, now they count on that money

Michael Jackson is expected to make his live comeback in Britain with up to 30 shows at London's O2 arena, it has emerged.

Publicists for Jackson and the venue refused to comment Photo: EPA The self-styled King of Pop will appear at the venue in person this Thursday to make a "special announcement" about his plans.

Jackson is believed to have agreed to a summer residency at the 20,000 capacity arena inside the old Millennium Dome in Greenwich in southeast London, which has previously hosted a 21-night stay from pop star Prince.

The singer landed in Britain on Tuesday and is staying at The Lanesborough five-star hotel in Knightsbridge, sources told Telegraph.co.uk.

If confirmed, the shows would be the 50-year-old's first performances in Britain since a brief, disappointing appearance at the World Music Awards in 2006.

The man behind Thriller, the best-selling album of all time, has kept a low profile since his acquittal in 2005 of child sex abuse charges, but is thought to be in dire need of funds. The singer has been forced to close his Neverland ranch and recently announced an online auction of more than 2,000 of his possessions.

The deal is the latest in a long line of coups for the O2, which has developed a reputation for attracting big name acts who rarely play live, and held off competition from major US venues to secure Jackson's comeback shows.

As well as Prince's 2006 residency, the arena hosted a spectacular comeback concert from rock bank Led Zeppelin and Britney Spears will play eight nights there in June.

The invitation sent out to journalists revealed only that Michael Jackson and AEG Live, which operates the venue, will make a "special announcement" at the O2 at 4pm on Thursday. Fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the performer are advised to arrive at the venue by 2pm.

Speculation last month suggested that Jackson could be line for around £1.5 million a night for the rumoured shows, securing a total fee of up to £45 million for a month's work.

Tickets are likely to be priced at hundreds of pounds each to cover the singer's costs, possibly surpassing the £500 Barbara Streisand charged fans to see her 2007 concert at the O2.

Publicists for Jackson and the venue refused to comment about the details of the announcement.
